Yoga routines are a set of yoga asanas and pranayama done in a preset sequence taking appropriate rest between asanas. These asanas and pranayama when practiced regularly result in desired fitness of mind and body.

For a beginner, it is advisable to join a yoga class as you may not be able to learn all the finer points of yoga practice on your own. A yoga instructor can clarify your doubts and correct your movements for a particular asana. Formulating a yoga sequence is much easier for people who have already done yoga and are considering to restart it.

How to choose a yoga routine?

It will depend upon your age, present health, flexibility and your expectations from yoga practice. A young person who is physically fit can do most of the yoga asanas without any difficulty. However, for people with sedentary lifestyles and poor health, following can be the obstacles for yoga practice:-
Old age/ Lack of strength.

Obesity and Lack of Exercise. Less flexibility. Lack of time.

Most of the people start looking for yoga when they are saddled with some lifestyle disease like hypertension or diabetes. Remember the age old maxim 'prevention is better than cure'. Start yoga when you are still young and healthy.

Most of people are not aware of the respiratory system and breathing patterns resulting in irregular and shallow breathing. Breathing rhythmically essentially involves observing your breathing and simultaneous conditioning of inflow, outflow and retention of breath in a rhythmic pattern. Breathing rate slows down while following a relaxed rhythm. This relaxes the body and also reduce wear and tear of internal organs.

Technique. Rhythmic breathing involves breathing in a fixed rhythmic pattern where ratio of inhalation, retention, exhalation and retention is of 2:1:2:1. Do not hold breathing if you are suffering from blood pressure or any heart disease. For beginners count while you breathe in four parts:

inhalalation
pause after inhalation
exhalation
pause after exhaling
Simply observe the breath, do not force the breath. Initially start breathing the way you breathe presently but gradually try to increase the depth of your breathing. Visualise that you are getting prana energy with each inhalation and each exhalation is taking out toxins from the body. Develop complete awareness of the rhythmic flow of breath.

Preparation

General guidelines for pranayama before starting this pranayama.
Sit on your favourite Asana (Vajra asana, Padma asana, Sukh asana) in a well ventilated room free from any distractions.

Beginners can sit on a chair or sit cross legged on the yoga mat/ carpet keeping your back and neck in a straight line. For very weak persons, lie down in supine position similar to shava asana.

Hold breath for a count of 2 (5-6).

Exhale at the same pace as you inhaled for count  Exhalation and inhalation time should be same.

Hold breath for a count
Steps 1-4 completes one breathing cycle which should be around 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle ten times. Gradually increase to 20 breathing cycles.

1-5 two to three times as long as you feel comfortable. Breathe in and out in a measured and harmonious manner. Is Laughter Yoga?
About Laughter Yoga,
Laughter Yoga is a deceptively simple, yet very powerful and potentially life-changing, form of exercise that anybody can do — anytime, anywhere. Its core premise is that your body can and knows how to laugh, regardless of what your mind has to say; Laughter Yoga is a body-mind approach to laughter, not something mind-body. The distinction is very important. Here you do not need to have a sense of humor, know jokes, or even be happy. Laughter Yoga invites you to fake it until it becomes real.

Yoga and Spirituality are inseparable. Yoga is an ancient teaching that helps the persistent practitioner to achieve the spiritual enlightment. By no means it consists of a set of exercise routine only.

Yoga is comprehensive system, a way of thinking, a way of living our everyday lives. Physical postures or Asanas and breathing exercises or Pranayama that are so popular on the West are just steps 3 and 4 of Raja yoga, which is one of the yogic paths’ to spiritual development.

There are 7 steps in Raja Yoga leading the practitioner to self-realization. These steps are described in the book of the sage Patanjali “The Yoga Sutras”. You can download it for free on this page.

Yoga played an important role in my life providing insights and answering the numerous questions that I had hard time to find answers to.

The Eastern occultism entered my life when I was 20 years old. I was lucky enough to find the book of Mabel Collins “Light on the path and through the gates of gold” in the country where the books on spirituality and religion were not published. Read the details on the Yoga page. You can also download the “Light on the path” for free.

Yoga personally helped me in a variety of ways – from improving my intuition to losing weight.

How to combine the simple Western Yoga practice with Yoga as a spiritual development tool?

It is not as hard as you might think. Here are some steps, simplified:

1. Do not lie, cheat, take advantage of other people or harm others in any way in your everyday life.

Stop habits that are damaging for you; stop harming and sabotaging yourself in any way.

Change your habitual negative thinking into positive the positive one. See some tips in the Techniques to Help You Think Positively article.

Stop judging people, you are no better than they are. As you go further in your practice you will realize deeply the concept of Oneness of all life so this will become easier for you.

YogaThe classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, the desire for greater personal freedom, health and long life, and heightened self-understanding gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has since spread throughout the world. The word Yoga means “to join or yoke together,” and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience.

The whole system of Yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing, and meditation. The exercises of Yoga are designed to put pressure on the glandular systems of the body, thereby increasing its efficiency and total health. The body is looked upon as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world, and so a Yoga student treats it with great care and respect. Breathing techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. The Yoga student gently increases breath control to improve the health and function of both body and mind. These two systems of exercise and breathing then prepare the body and mind for meditation, and the student finds an easy approach to a quiet mind that allows silence and healing from everyday stress. Regular daily practice of all three parts of this structure of Yoga produce a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body.

Benefits of Yoga to Your Bones, Muscles, and Joints
The physical benefits of yoga are myriad. Yoga keeps your body strong, as it involves all the muscles in your body to hold and balance yoga asanas (poses). The various yoga postures strengthen your feet, legs, hands, abdominals, lower back, legs, and shoulders.
Yoga's stretching and breathing exercises improve your flexibility, helping joints, tendons, and muscles stay limber. People suffering from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis will see a noticeable improvement in their stiffness, pain, and other arthritic symptoms by practicing yoga poses and postures.
Yoga improves your endurance, especially the more athletic forms of yoga such as ashtanga yoga, power yoga, vinyasa yoga, and Bikram yoga. These rigorous yoga practices follow a specific sequence of poses (asanas) that become more challenging as you progress. Unlike the more gentle hatha yoga, the forms of ashtagna yoga, power yoga, vinyasa yoga, and Bikram yoga require you to keep your body in constant motion between poses, resulting in a strenuous cardiovascular workout and improved core strength.
Hatha yoga can relieve chronic back and neck pain, since the poses and postures gently stretch and strengthen your back and neck muscles.
Yoga is often prescribed to help heal various injuries, including repetitive strain injuries, knee and back injuries, pulled hamstrings, even minor skin burns. Of course, you should consult your physician before using yoga as a treatment for any injury!
Yoga is an excellent weight-bearing exercise that can improve your bone density. This is particularly beneficial for women approaching menopause, since yoga can help ward off osteoporosis, or thinning of the bone.
Benefits of Yoga to the Cardiovascular System
Yoga has tremendous health benefits for your heart. Most notably:

Yoga positions for beginners, required for beginners are classified into different groups for the convenience of learners. For your yoga practice follow the sequence of yoga stretches, standing poses, supine poses, prone poses, sitting positions, pranayama and meditation.
What is yoga lifestyle? It is virtually impossible to separate philosophy of life from yoga. Progress in yoga depends not only on your efforts on the mat. Equally important is to consider what you do off the mat during the rest of the day. Each moment unfolds in your situations requiring your response. You may respond in a positive way or negative way. Even not responding is an action. Yogic lifestyle involves integrating your, mind body and soul to perform karma that takes you towards good health, peace of mind and ultimate freedom. Most of us are caught in the whirlwind known as human life;

A man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in their present or the future. He lives as if he is never going to die; and then he dies having never really lived.
